Pottery 101: Wheel Throwing & Hand-Building Foundations

Welcome to the Pottery 101: Wheel Throwing & Hand-Building Foundations class where you will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of centering clay on a pottery wheel.

Curious about working with clay? In this 8-week beginner pottery class, you’ll explore the full range of foundational ceramic techniques, including wheel throwing, hand-building, and thrown-and-altered forms.

Students will learn every step of the ceramic process - from preparing and wedging clay to centering on the wheel, pulling walls, shaping functional forms, and trimming. Hand-building techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab construction will be introduced alongside wheel work, allowing students to understand how forms are built both on and off the wheel.

Guided by an experienced instructor, you’ll also explore altering thrown forms, joining methods, basic surface decoration, glazing fundamentals, and proper finishing techniques. Weekly projects are designed to build skills progressively while encouraging experimentation and personal expression.

Perfect for anyone new to pottery, Pottery 101 provides a strong technical foundation and a well-rounded introduction to working with clay, equipping you with the skills and confidence to continue in ceramics beyond the class.
